The Free Association - '(I Wish I Had A) Wooden Heart'

Soundtrack-maverick, producer-mastermind, sonic-remixer and solo-artist in his own right, David Holmes may be Ireland's busiest dance-pioneer, but, in between all of the graft, he's managed to form one of 2003's potentially most colourful and alluring pop-groove crossover acts in the shape of The Free Association.

A sufficient number of heart-palpitating textures and gentle rhythms to help ease out the prospects of a wintry, shivering intro to the year in debut-single '(I Wish I Had A) Wooden Heart', Holmes and co. have blended a track so abidingly enriching and ambitious that any reservations for its lack of swear word-based street-cred can be wilfully discarded in a moment's reflection on the end-product.

Even complete with a perplexing Roots Manuva-reworked flava on the b-side, this is as idyllic as beats 'n' grinds get.
