The Futureheads - '1-2-3-Nul! EP' (Fantastic Plastic)
4/5

Produced via the ultimate backing of former Gang Of Four legend Andy Gill, The Futureheads sound like a paranoid, E-d up bunch of sailors manning the decks whilst blasting their Jam and Clash records at full volume. And, yes, in case you held any doubts, debut-EP proper, '1-2-3-Nul!', is a faithful representation of such a claim.
So, it's a tad frivolously reckless, quite immediately ridiculous, yet no less tuneful and admirably hook-infested. Don't expect to understand it all at first - it could sound like the most ludicrous thing you've ever heard ('student-punk' is hardly a flattering title), but investigate the Television-esque entrance of 'Cabaret' or defiant backing, shouting-vox of 'A Picture Of Dorian Gray' and you'll realise that The F's brand of unique, classic song-writing is nigh-on the most frighteningly innovative sound currently being constructed in our resurgence of rock.
Quite, this is a group with something markedly different to say, and play - much to their mildly baffling favour.
