Future Kings Of Spain - 'Hanging Around' (Red Flag)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan

The Future Kings of Spain are the sound of pure potential - well-studied students of slacker rock and roll handing in their first tentative works to resounding nods of peer approval. Early days, yes, but this doesn't sound half-formed, it doesn't sound unfinished or in the least bit immature. It just hints that one day, it could all get so much better.
Lifting a highlight from their fine, eponymous debut album, 'Hanging Around' is proof that there is absolutely nothing to dislike about the Future Kings of Spain. Their favourite tricks are probably some of yours, you'll have a couple of favourite bands in common as well, we'd wager. It glances at Pavement circa 'Wowee Zowee' and lifts a glorious tune that could have come straight out of the Malkmus book, one with a sweetly infectious chorus, unfathomable lyrical theme and controlled, but still slightly unpredictable, musical-nature.
What's not to love, indeed? There's the one small problem - there's absolutely nothing not to love. It's just in itself, and that's not an adequate enough reason to be in love with it. All the same, it keeps on throwing that wonderful chorus your way, and you enjoy it every time. And it's both annoyingly and admirably persistent, we'll give it that.
