Fugazi - 'Furniture' (Dischord)

4/5

By: Toby L

Fugazi - 'Furniture'Fugazi have been the driving-force in the endeavour of remaining authentic when contemporaries around them would sell out, subjected to the mirages painted to them by major-labels. Instead of succumbing to mainstream music-culture, they shacked up their own record-company imprint - the cult Dischord - and proceeded to release their music purely from their own camp. Along with this and their reluctance to speak to journalists that don't stack up, they're pioneers in that long lost art of, oh, what's it called... Oh yeah - being true to themselves and their fans.Hardcore and as thrillingly underground as ever, this is their first single-release for over ten years, would you believe, which has been prompted to help create awareness for what many have dubbed their most vital album to date, 'Argument'. The guitars are loud - mainly focusing, at least on the lead-track, around a simple bass-guitars-drum structure of one trashy, infectious hook repeated continuously, over which the crash-bang-whollop verbal singing assault of Ian MacKaye proves itself to be both relevant and strangely powerful. The remaining two tracks - exclusive to the release - see a menacingly dynamic instrumental ('Number Five') and painstakingly frantic, 'Hello Morning' rounding off efforts. The evidence is seemingly in place from this alone to suggest that the 'Gazi have still got it. In fact, it would be tough to envisage a time where they don't 'still got it'.
