The Golden Virgins - 'I've Seen The Light' (Rex Records)
3/5
By: Toby L

Opting for that rustic, press-record-and-let's-just-give-it-a-go approach, The Golden Virgins' debut 7" single was produced within just one take. On a four-track. So, no, a lavish Quincy Jones-esque recording this is not.
But that's by no means a reason to dismiss the dextrous and quietly comforting tones of the Virgins, whose similar approach to recording in the vein of such heroes as the Velvets and Iggy may not hinder quite the same dazzling product, yet does settle on forming a mid-pace number akin to Pavement at their liveliest, had they come from Sunderland.
With two further tunes of identical charm and grace on the flip-side - 'Staying Sober' and 'From The Garage to the Country' - this is a neat package that your record-collection wouldn't do too badly from including... It's a genuine wonder that frontman Lucas Renney sings of how his 'mother died of shame' with such an achievement as this cropping up in the family-tree.
