Goldfrapp - 'Twist' (Mute)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan

The gap between the last Goldfrapp record, the sweet and sultry 'Felt Mountain', and the current, world-conquering 'Black Cherry' must have been some strange kind of musical puberty. Once all sweet and innocent, now a switch has been flicked and the world of Goldfrapp is one of boys, girls, sex, sleaze and little else. Unlike the plague of the acne-ridden rest of us at that hideous time, they manage to come across as absolutely stunning throughout it too.
So, when exactly was the last time a record told you to 'put your dirty angel face between my legs'? Sordid isn't the half of it, you actually come away feeling clammy. When Marilyn Manson described them as sounding like 'Gary Glitter & Marlene Dietrich turning the Nuremburg rallies into a rave' he wasn't far off the mark, but he didn't mention what a joy it is to be back indulging in some unashamedly 80s, proper, controversial pop music for once.
There's something of the dominatrix about Goldfrapp that suggests sooner or later, against your better judgement, you're going to have to surrender. Take the following advice - don't even bother putting up a fight.
