Gomez - 'Sound Of Sounds' / 'Ping One Down' (Hut)

Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonising! Lilting acoustic guitars! Dreamily romantic lyrics! ('Do you ever wonder/Where you'd be without her?') Evidently, the Gomez chameleon-effect is on full display on 'Sound of Sounds', a three-minute summer pop gem, just like they used to make.
'Ping One Down', on the other hand, demonstrates the 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach: an idiosyncratic hotch-potch which ends up sounding a little bit like a lot of things - and a lot like Gomez.
Sometimes, we guess, the expected is always unexpected with such a group.
