Good Charlotte - 'The Anthem' (Epic)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan

Shed a tear if you will for the poor souls in Good Charlotte. Their last trio of singles have revealed an inner-pain so deep, it's a wonder they can get up in the morning. So, girls don't like them (hard to believe). They've got no money (just plain lies). And now we get 'The Anthem', a tale of how they're really just geeky losers at heart.
But boy, can such geeky losers write some unnervingly catchy tunes. Two listens, that's all it takes - you know the words, you sing them along, you're strumming the chorus on your guitar... Come on, admit it, you're enjoying it too aren't you? Of course you are.
'Do you really wanna be like them,' they sing of people in jobs and universities, before a heartfelt plea to 'sing if you're with me, another loser anthem'. But surely if this was an anthem for true outsiders, people so unique they'd been outcast by society, its audience would be considerably smaller than Good Charlotte's mammoth fan-base? But of course, it isn't, it's about being just as distinctive and rebellious as the millions of other GC followers clad in the same pop-punk uniform and haircuts.
Is this a deeply hidden irony that's sadly destined to go unnoticed? Well, perhaps. Nonetheless, Good Charlotte create some highly individual stuff, well, in a strangely conformist way.
