Gorillaz - 'Tomorrow Comes Today' (Parlophone)
4/5

Perhaps one day this is what all music will sound like. This is the debut release from the mysterious Gorillaz outfit. The talents of Blur's Damon Albarn and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien have been enlisted, both being recent contributors on the Deltron 3030 LP, in addition to producer, hip hop guru Dan The Automator. With a list as strong and as varied as this, it's not a wonder they've come up with a fantastic set of sounds. It's hip hop with melodicas and guitars one minute, then straight hip hop... Then latin... And then acoustic rock - each track proving to be as compelling as the last.

Title track 'Tomorrow Comes Today' lifts the melody from Blur track 'I Got Law', building on it to produce a mellow, but at the same time pretty funky cut. As is the Del Tha Funkee Homosapien's (that's what his momma named him) effort, 'Rock The House', which is as straight up as hip hop gets, reminiscent in musical terms to some of the Beasties' instrumental dabblings featured on 'Ill Communication'. Probably the best thing about this fine EP, however, is the enhanced multimedia element, which includes the full promo for the lead track as well as a band biography; mmm, technology.
The EP is a testament to musical diversity. Hip hop has tunes and guitars are funky again. Maybe the line up of the band will continue to change; I'm sure Ad-Rock and Chris from Coldplay could lay down some interesting stuff... And, come to think of it, Eminem's Belle and Sebastian collaboration has been in the pipeline for a while... Whatever happens next, it takes people like Gorillaz, whoever the hell they are, to try it out. This time they've succeeded.
