Gemma Hayes - 'Back Of My Hand'

Gemma Hayes isn't quite as violent as the title of her third single 'Back Of My Hand' from her debut LP 'Night On My Side' might suggest. In fact, there is actually not a pimp slap reference in the whole song; the 'Back Of My Hand' Hayes refers to is a sweet statement of yearning: 'Give me your heart/Write it on the back of my hand'.

So, as far as heartbreak goes, Hayes puts it all on the line here. Lyric after lyric conveys the torture she must have experienced in order to influence the piece, yet it's nothing complicated, though; Hayes states things simply, but with a conviction that proves them earnest.

'Well, we never really said goodbye/We kind of left it in the air/And as the train pulled off, I knew you loved her more'.

Couple such a sentiment with bracing acoustic strumming, gentle beats and dulcet musical accompaniment, and what results is a genuinely enriching outing from an Irish singer-songwriter that's sure to make waves in the future. She'll do this with her words, too - not the 'back of her hand'.
