Headway - 'Vital Signs' (V2)
3/5
By: Toby L

With fellow Notts revellers Seachange rising to the fore, and the angelic, confessedly intense-seeking strummings of the very tipped The Open earning sky-high plaudits, perhaps newcomers Headway's timing is impeccable, what with their Midlands origins and plaintive, melodic, introspective and heavy scribings. Or, perhaps, so the critics will judge, they simply bask in too much Coldplay.
Whatever, with debut-EP 'Vital Signs', the quartet have spawned an intrinsically pretty, gracefully touching clutch of intro-material as sweeping as it proves poignantly woeful. Of course, it's all very typically British, but when the foursome stray on to the whirling keys and haunting ambience of a down-tempo 'Miss America', this is when their formula strikes convincing pay-dirt.
