Hundred Reasons - 'The Great Test' (Columbia)
3/5
By: Samantha Hall

In case we don't remember; Hundred Reasons were the guys that in the same year as sweeping a slew of award-ceremonies performed a storming highlight set at Reading and sold out Brixton Academy. These 'crazy' mopped lads proved the Home Counties weren't just full of stoner, boarding (and we mean dormitories rather than skating) kids. They were our saviours of British (lite-)hardcore - they proved Surrey had, er, balls, and we didn't need to imitate or follow blindly down the Stateside emo-punk path... The UK could do its own thing and it could be fresh, profoundly serious, yet fun... You didn't have to be bloody miserable or put on a Californian accent to be rock.
Yet, Colin n' pals were so 'now', so leading the way, that... unfortunately (if you pardon the pun), they've since 'faltered' a bit (possibly). A concise single, 'The Great Test' - the bearer of clear, dominant vocals, raging guitar-parts and a grasping melody - is sadly a bit on the predictable side. For their first single off their new, second album (currently yet to be titled), HR fans expected something elaborate, more varied than the last - and, seemingly, it ain't here yet... not that it'd be beyond our ravaging quintet to have a trick resting up their sleeve for the start of 2004.
