Jane's Addiction - 'True Nature' (Capitol)

3/5

Jane's Addiction - 'True Nature'

Don't know about you, but we've always loved Jane's Addiction. I mean, you didn't see them back in the day, you didn't hold their hand through rehab, you haven't got this, that and the other on Japanese picture disk. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if you thought 'Strays' was their debut album.

Apologies, ignore such petty musical-snobbery, it's only there as an example of how many people will rightly state a convincing if thoroughly annoying claim as to why the Addiction are so important in the grand scheme of rock and roll. The amount of people pretending to be genuine with such claims has also rocketed in recent months. But little do they realise we've all got as much right to this as each other, so let's be a little controversial for a minute... Great to have you back guys, but 'True Nature' is hardly your most affecting piece of work. That heavy pounding riff works nicely enough, but quite what else there is to it takes some finding, buried as it is amidst stacks of reverb and echo. If that wasn't Perry Farrell's brilliant trademark howl, disappointingly, you'd be forgiven for thinking this could be a whole host of Jane pretenders.

'True Nature' by no means bombs, just doesn't quite hit the spot. It's an adequate enough way to be introduced to a band of such significance, but for the uninitiated, not the best place to start. After all, that's what beginnings are for.
