Jet - 'Dirty Sweet EP' (Elektra)
3/5

Was it not Bob Dylan or Justin Timberlake (so easy to get confused between the two...) that once said something along the lines of great artists wearing their influences on their sleeves..?
Whoever the quote, Jet would surely be that person's favourite new band. Rolling Stones, AC/DC, damn - even a measure of Status Quo, all savagely re-adapted, and what equates is the Australian act's hyped debut-release, 'Dirty Sweet': four hellishly traditional stabs at yesteryear rock 'n' roll with solos, haircuts and outfits to match, with not much in the way of the contemporary.
From the bar-rock brutality of an opening, defiant 'Take It Or Leave It', it's a trouble to not develop a bit of heated excitement, the grappling hooks and growling vocals combining to wild effect. Nothing betters it on the release sadly, the rest of the demo-recordings too stark to truly reach out, but there's no doubting the palpable impact that the likes of a gravely US-inspired 'Rollover DJ' or acoustic, slide-guitar aided 'Move On' could bode in a live-arena.
Sure, a headrush of press-hyperbole is set to follow, and an inevitable backlash or guarded cynicism along the way - but, seriously folks, don't get distracted by what could otherwise be a fun ride. As Jet themselves would likely utter, let alone their forefathers, it's only rock 'n' roll - and, so far, little more, little less.
