J Xaverre - 'Saturday' (Memphis Industries)
3/5
By: Thomas Hannan

We now have a new anthem for people that can't be bothered to get out of bed.
... Except, to sing an anthem suggests some kind of passion and gusto: difficult emotions to conjure for a song about slow weekends. Instead, JX's latest work provokes the equivalent of one very enjoyable, first thing in the morning yawn... On such evidence, not a lot gets done round J Xaverre's place on a Saturday.
And where many bands these days seem proud to form a part of super-groups comprising of all manner of talent from other acts, there's a certain air of embarrassment regarding Pete 'JX' Gofton's former employers. 'Whisper it quietly,' his press-blurb states, for he used to be Johnny X in Kenickie.
No need for such shame. They were never really that bad. And even if they were, let's look forward and not dwell on our girly-pop past, yes? As it happens, if all the new material proves this plush and tuneful, once it develops some kind of pulse, it looks set to be far more engaging anyway.
