The Kills - 'Pull A U' (Domino)
3/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw

Some have long been convinced that The Kills are a one-song wonder; that their music rarely strays from the particular musical blue(s)print - but a good one at that - they had crafted via debut radio-grabber, lead-track off their debut 'Black Rooster EP', the rapt 'Cat Claw'.
In small doses, The Kills manage to do something quite special, as 'Pull A U' testifies. VV snarls and zounds with feral scorn, contending with a riff that scoops and zips in malevolent precision; it gnarls along with an unsettling insidious intent that borrows from virtually every major participant of the history of rock 'n' roll - and no bad thing either.
It appears that The Kills channel the spirit of under-lit back-alleyways better here than live, due no doubt to the effects of classic-production. 'Black magic', alright.
