Mark Lanegan Band - 'Here Comes The Chill'

As startlingly industrial and relentless as one might expect from a collaboration including the guitar genius of Josh Homme and bassist from QOTSA Nick Oliveri, live Stone Age member Mark Lanegan with his self-titled band invoke a dark partnership indeed.

'Methamphetamine Blues' is a track architected by carcinogen vocals over a background rhythm hammered down like molten iron being chiselled on a chain conveyor-belt and with Homme's guitar licks mirrored by white-trash female wails; the sound of chaos has never sounded so inspired or infectious.

Conversely, 'Message To Mine' features softened vocals and an introduction bearing more than a passing nod to the late Jeff Buckley. This is short-lived though, with an interim of the former cracked southern spark set against backing-vox and a guitar-solo so crisp that it effortlessly takes centre-stage above the voices. 'Skeletal History' pursues the same shady roots of 'Methamphetamine Blues' but with a brief acoustic interlude played by a red-right hand.

Sure enough, this EP conjures a bloody, bleak atmosphere that will chill the soul; untrustworthy, suspect and down right dirty. Just as you like it.
