Leaves - 'Breathe' (7176)

As the signs of Winter slowly find themselves being exchanged for the evidence of an imminently arriving Spring, it's often a pleasant feeling to know that there's music available to soundtrack the passing of such moods.

With their debut release - the 'Breathe' EP - Leaves have found themselves picking up on an emotive spirit and genre-variation that hasn't really existed for what seems like an age. Lead-singer Arnar's hushed and introverted vocal on the lead-track seems almost unnerving to begin with - that is until the heart-warming chorus opens up, which features the frontman crooning, 'You can't keep me in, still you try,' in the most aching of deliveries.
Luckily, they even succeed where others fail - and ensure that the following two tracks match the similar high quality. The haunting 'Favour' and upbeat 'Alone In The Sun' point to evidence that their first album will be something to cherish and await with great relish; and it almost amazes you to think that this is just their original demo.
Judging from this, though, no matter what season you'll hear them in, it appears that Leaves will always have their own unique formula of guitar-textured melodies to suit the occasion.
