Longwave - 'Exit' (Hummer)
4/5
By: Toby L
Longwave are the NYC quartet that are currently - gah, excuse the pun - making serious waves in the music-world - especially since their recent tours with none other than home-town heroes, The Strokes. Yet, despite the live-billing, the 'Wave are quite different from the aforementioned five-piece counterpart, and are rightfully garnering their own audience and rave reviews.
The reason for such a bright future is simple: Longwave write great songs. Although a viewing of their live-set proves that their beautiful feedback-laden melodies, unusually strong bass-lines and acute percussion can notch up some epic tunes, 'Exit' is just one example of a very broad spectrum of high-quality compositions they have to offer.
Its floating chorus, ably provided by Steve Schiltz's harmonic, high-pitched croon, is supplemented extraordinarily by Radiohead-alike guitar-structures/vision, whilst the very driven production - worked on by RockFeedBack writer Gordon Raphael - is an energised and very vibrant effort.
Look out for this band in 2002; after all, every alt-fan should reserve space in their CD-collection in order to house this dynamic act's recordings...
