Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - 'Dark Wave'

It's one of alt-music's most closely guarded secrets: just why Malkmus and The Jicks have been quite as overlooked as they have in recent months, when matter such as this is produced...

Presumably a compendium of tracks sourced from the recent, and fruitful, 'Pig Lib' session, it's the trio of add-on's following freak-out lead-track 'Dark Wave' that really boost the necessity of owning this package; the gleeful mooch-along of 'Dynamic Calories', piano-bolstered hammering of 'Fractions & Feelings' and minimalist, similes-driven sassiness of 'Old Jerry'... Really, old Malkmus must be f**king mad letting these slide out as mere b-sides.

Otherwise, the time-changes peculiarity of 'The Poet & The Witch' (as recorded live in Malmo, Sweden) and following Australia-aired run-through of a harder-edged 'Shake It Around' round off a densely indie-centric and rivetingly diverse series of art-rockers. Good value.
