M.A.S.S. - 'Hey Gravity' (Radiate)
3/5
By: Toby L

'Hey Gravity' is the debut-single from new scenesters M.A.S.S., rather marvellously showcasing just what influence The Strokes have genuinely cast over the music-industry over the past twelve months. Deadpan-delivery in the ploddy bass, shaky guitar and static, focussed drums ooze out behind front-woman Justine's somewhat forefront and overtaking vocal, recalling the current 21st Century sassiness of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen*O and even Lulu's strained and sore tones.
Intriguingly, however, the b-sides indicate to a group capable of more than just the immediate A-side, with the following Manics/'Found That Soul' blast of 'Running Out Of Here' and moody, one-minute long shoe-gazing of 'My Side' rounding off the selection quite bizarrely.
Surely only one part of the picture, hold on for future releases or 'til they're in a town near you for the fuller story.
