Cass McCombs - 'Not The Way' (4AD)
3/5
By: Toby L

It's looking good: a label-deal with the impossibly cult 4AD; a debut, six-track EP rated by celebo-fans and the quiet talk of trendy, underground-music circles; and a name to front the package - Cass McCombs - so distinctive, you're already swayed to the cause.
'Not The Way' showcases perhaps most successfully McComb's weedy, Dylan-y warble - one that cuts past its own authentic scratchiness on the moody, opening lead-track, and otherwise fitting into place in an alt-country sombreness elsewhere throughout. Aided by airy, authentico-minimalist production, and gently hammered pianos, this is tasteful, elegant beauty at its most wilfully downtrodden.
