With its plodding pace and grand structure, 'The Dark Is Rising' is an irresistible example of the high-in-dosage magic that Mercury Rev have to offer - orchestral, OTT, and strangely wistful.
A bravery of expression in song that's void of cheesiness, despite its potentially tacky space-rock undertones. For an accomplished and utterly romantic take on the avant-garde end of pop, the Rev have once again delivered.
