Mogwai - 'My Father My King' (PIAS)

4/5

By: Toby L

Mogwai - 'My Father My King'Mogwai. Single. Mogwai release a single. They're selling out surely, trying to get their mugs on 'Smash Hits', is that it? Oh, it's over twenty minutes long? Right. There are advantages to the last fact actually, as it happens. For starters, it gives the band a chance to further spread their wings in typical, try-anything-once Mogwai stylee, whilst also mean they can rope in legendary producer/musician Steve Albini to work the knobs for them. Plus, there are are no mind-numbingly crap b-sides to sit through. Bonus. The basis for 'My Father My King' is incidentally a Jewish hymn, which thus starts off on hardly the most upbeat of themes. But it's rewarding, allowing Stuie Braithwaite and co. the opportunity to work their magic and essentially perform the tones to their natural, broken down form, and then mess it up with pure noise and 'poignant' instrument-thrashing. The daunting duration time of twenty-one minutes therefore feels more like quarter of that, the fitting crescendo of fine-sequenced distortion and expansive arrangements enabling not one moment of uninspired effort, nor glitch of boredom. The best way to hear it? Well, clearly on headphones - with the volume on max... We're drooling at the prospect of a next record already.
