Mood Elevator - 'Long Hard Look' (Laughing Outlaw)
4/5
By: Clara Burtenshaw

The heavenly harmonies of The Beach Boys, chord-progressions straight from Abbey Road, the crushing distortion of Weezer, married to the quirk of SFA and the kitsch of early Supergrass. You'd think that it was time to put the LSD down and take a long hard look.
But you are not a dreaming wastrel - you have just ridden the impossibly laid-back tones of the first EP from Mood Elevator, a band whose name says it all, duh. Yet, these are not sun-kissed dudes from California, but familiar names, and from Detroit - Christopher Plum, plus Brendan Benson & The Wellfed Boys. Merrily, 'Long Hard Look' boasts some complicated edgy pop, fusing old-skool ideas with modern studio trickery, whilst cleverly retaining the charm and warmth of a lo-fi recording. The pleasure's all ours.
