Mull Historical Society - 'Am I Wrong' (Blanco Y Negro)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan

He doesn't do himself any favours. Mull Historical Society's sole mastermind Colin MacIntyre is a man torn between two camps, a musical soul divided by its own eccentric personality. It makes him feel the need to spend time putting wigs on a dog on one hand, and harbour the desire to write some genuine, beautiful tunes on the other. Similarly, the wish to deliver something as classy as 'Am I Wrong' on the A Side, and the irresistible temptation to do an (albeit brilliant) baroque 'n roll pastiche of Ms. Dynamite's calling card 'It Takes More' on the flip. He'll probably make his mind up one day.
For now however, let's enjoy the contradiction, as MacIntyre can write a tune, that's for certain. Five guitar chords, one piano riff and enough melodic bombast to last an entire Beach Boys record, 'Am I Wrong' is a gloriously stirring tune that manages keep an elusive cheeky quality hidden not so deep under the surface whilst still remaining quite a touching love song with it all.
You'd be forgiven for not knowing quite what to make of any of it, but that's a confusion to enjoy, not be discouraged by. On its own, the music itself is actually pretty straightforward, and somewhat delightful too.
