Mull Historical Society - 'Watching Xanadu' (Blanco Y Negro)
4/5

The quirkiness of prior single-releases was finally put into full context with the release of Mull Historical Society's debut LP, 'Loss', which - by on large - was possibly one of the key overlooked gems of 2001.
However, what with daytime airplay on Radio One with last 45, the more upbeat 'Animal Cannabus', as well as regular MTV2 plays of the new video for this single, you can't help but feel Mull HS may be able to finally leave that distant Scottish Isle from which they originate, and have their sights set on taking over the rest of the world.
And, if that's to be the case, then they're heading in the correct direction. 'Watching Xanadu' is a fine pop-track in all the key senses; there's the catchy chorus, which kicks in not too long into its duration, a memorable refrain of a given lyric ('It really doesn't matter' - which, worryingly, was also used by The Corrs in one of their hits...) and the sort of unusual instrumentation that keeps their sound clean and at all times fresh, thus attractive to audiences of all backgrounds.
But, whether or not the duo's ship will ever come in determines purely on artist luck, for - seemingly - everything else seems to be in its right place.
