Muse - 'Time Is Running Out' (Taste Media / East West)
4/5

Artists are renowned for being over-protective of their work, shrouding it with secrecy and keeping everything well and truly under lock and key. Not Matthew Bellamy. There's some niggling quality to every Muse song, no matter how good, that makes it feel like a snapshot of a work-in-progress, and the shamelessly awesome 'Time Is Running Out' is no exception.
After this, the 'how to write a Muse song' manual will need updating a little, the trio daring to bring the funk to the percussion and at least three different choruses for Matt Bellamy's still-astounding vocal-acrobatics to tackle. But nonetheless, even with two-million records sold since their humble Devon beginnings, they're continually developing their genius.
Maybe their defining moment of greatness will be found on the upcoming 'Absolution' album, but as yet, this isn't it. But before you write this off as a mindless criticism, take a moment to consider how fortunate we are - Britain's brightest hope have just released a tremendous record and we're certain that in a few years' time they'll be writing music so stellar that 'Time Is Running Out' will be dismissed as a mere triviality. Far from time running out, it can't pass quick enough.
