The Music - 'You Might As Well Try To F**k Me EP' (Hut)

4/5

By: Toby L

Following their debut single, 'Take The Long Road & Walk It', released on Fierce Panda, The Music were never going to have an easy time. Their previous work - a limited edition seven inch - sold out in merely hours and set the stead by which many expected them to be able to reach in future efforts. Now, we've received release no. 2 - an EP comprising four tracks.

The Music

EP's always seem to show up a band for what they're worth quite early on; luckily, this year has seen blinding ones released, though there have been a few rotten apples amongst the bunch, where the lead-track is top notch, but the rest wouldn't sound out of place in a hospital waiting-room due to its lack of inspiration. Yet, 'You Might As Well Try To F**k Me' is actually an exception - all tracks merit praise for their considerable glowing quality.Whilst track-one - the title-song - is an appropriate and welcoming intro, it's by the time the closing embers of 'Too High' ring out of the speakers that you admit to yourself The Music have got something good. The dashing of groove-fuelled psychedelia, exciting, traditional rock-guitar and Robert Plant-esque vocals may sound as if the group's theme is poached from another era in musical history, but when the CD starts spinning, it's fairly blatant that a new twist has been put on events, creating one of the freshest sounds for a new band this year. And, luckily, it's not like Kula Shaker. They may be young and still to prove themselves further, but these guys are generating a well-deserved buzz for advancing endeavours. Let's just hope the high level of decent content is matched in forthcoming records.
