Musique Vs U2 - 'New Year's Dub' (Serious)

4/5

By: Toby L

Musique Vs U2 - 'New Year's Dub'Yes. The title 'New Year's Dub' certainly does lead you to ask yourself a couple of questions: 'How come they're releasing it months into 2001, as opposed to the end,' and, 'Surely, in order for people to celebrate a LARGE new year's eve, this track should be spinning then and not at any other period,' spring to mind. However, the point is that you ask yourself these questions before pushing play; once that disc is rotating and creating sound, you can no longer care when it's released, and are instead thankful it has seen the light of day.

Incorporating The Edge's trademark hovering guitar effect and Adam Clayton's distinct bass-rhythms via the sample of U2's 'New Year's Day', a new slant is presented that will no doubt either sicken fans of the Irish mega-group or get them searching around for their club outfits.

For this remix, the A-side of which is presented in a delightfully slim, short-for-radio-airplay dosage, is a bit of a beat-crunching, room-rocking shocker of a number: even if you possess the smallest of hi-fis, it can be guaranteed that it will be physically rumbling throughout the CD's duration. Only the ever-so-slighty clichι vocals tamper with the end-product, but no doubt such an MC would make a necessary and valuable live-addition.

Luckily, the B-sides steer clear of the island marked 'filler', with Mauro Picotto's eight minute-plus mix providing a new view on an already well re-worked release. One good thing about that title now, though: we can play it to death at the moment until we're sick of it and then dig it out at the end of December for some true new year parties - sorted.
