The Obsession - 'Wide Blood' (Soviet Union)
3/5

Now, there's nothing wrong with bug-eyed, speed-freak rock, splayed-leg poses, manic vocals and bold pronouncements on how great you are. It's just that this kind of thing is chuffin' everywhere at the moment.
Three such bands recently delivered recordings to rockfeedback HQ. We shall not be too unkind to Manc quartet The Obsession (***) and their four tracks of blistering noise, however, as they have a truly ace name, instil enough dynamism into their music to prove that they, like, really really love it.
Aylesbury trio Stag (***) include a satirical 'history of cool' on their website, but require something to differentiate their sneery, sweaty rawk riffs from everyone else's. 'Waiting For Nothing To Happen', the final track on this single (their second to date) does give some cause for confidence though, as mature and exquisite as something off Coldplay's 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head.'
The Vacation (**) come from Hollywood and claim to 'incorporate both Stooges style riffs and Primal Scream's scrawny swagger'. But doesn't everyone do that these days? Solace, however, is provided via Ben Tegel's nasal vocals sounding more Scouse than Sunset Boulevard on opener 'White House' and the stuttering 'No Hard Feelings'.
