Oceansize - 'One Day All This Could Be Yours' (Beggars Banquet)

4/5

Oceansize - 'One Day...'

'By George, I think we've cracked it!' said Professor Rock of Huge Swaggering Guitar Laboratories. Well, probably. Oceansize are the finished article that the likes of Mansun and The Cooper Temple Clause were merely the prototype for, the band they never really dared to be... Finally, we've found the missing link between Fugazi and Pink Floyd.

'One Day All This Could Be Yours' is a howling beast of a tune, full to bursting-point of menace, venom and startling skill. It's difficult to think of anyone else who's making music quite like this at present, tunes with enough substance and drive to live up to their own bombast. Oceansize's talent knows no bounds, switching from the gyrating, spellbinding percussion of the title-track one minute to the enormous riffs of 'Breed Siamese' the next, seemingly without breaking a sweat.

Intense, focused, incredibly determined stuff, the colossal closer to these proceedings is a ten-minute live-recording of 'Massive Bereavement'; recorded last New Year's Eve, when everyone else was likely up to their eyeballs in liquor, Oceansize made this noise - a terrifyingly tight, fantastic noise. That's dedication for you.

It's packaged in white cardboard, with some white writing over the top. Nothing about this, not even reading the sleeve, is meant to be easy. Oceansize are a challenge, but for once, definitely one to delight and revel in.
