Oceansize - 'Relapse EP' (Beggars Banquet)

4/5

By: Toby L

Oceansize - 'Relapse'

Layered, lush smatterings of instrument-textured poignancy, an unadulterated catapult of mixed paints against a blank canvas.

Oceansize's penchant for creating from the swirling pool of ideas marked 'uncharted territory' is consistently a wonder in the live-arena and, now, finally - the conversion is fully made to recording, and a three-track EP, 'Relapse', comprising three compositions so bold and mind-engulfing you're heftily advised to press play at least eight times and listen from beginning to end 'til the full effect rubs off on you. As amply produced by Tim 'The Cardiacs are my day-job' Smith - the jazz-precision drumming, towering vocals of Mike Vennart, and team of guitar-pulverisers - darn it, it's just such an inimitable coalition of extreme and striking forces.

And, with more material by the bucketload set to similarly mesmerize and spellbound, remember - these are still early days yet.
