Orange Can - 'Young Man' (Regal)
3/5
By: Toby L
Give it ten seconds and you think that it won't arrive, but, sure enough, 'Young Man' does. Fading in with deep, swirly bass, almost silenced acoustic guitar and lead-singer Jason's almost Par from the Wannadies vocals, what follows is a song that's just waiting to build up. Chords are strummed louder and a chorus bellows the unidentifiable, but strangely necessary, lyrics allowing the hushed words to sound like an instrument as opposed to a cocky frontman's ramblings on life.

B-sides follow in a similar fashion with an advance on nice guitar-y bits in the mellow 'Close Knit Family', which casually melts into the harmonic 'Honey'. In short, moody, threateningly quiet, though magically subtle, Orange Can have weaved together three compositions so musically accomplished and diverse that this short collection of tracks shouldn't be absent from your CD singles rack. Besides, their press agent, Caffy St. Luce, says, 'It's great music to have a bath to.' We asked if we could involve her in a live webcam of this event to see if she was right. She declined. Bugger.
