Beth Orton - 'Thinking About Tomorrow' (Heavenly)

3/5

By: Toby L

Beth Orton

Why she bothers with this mere process, we shall never know. Beth Orton is one of those rare, esteemed talents richly gifted enough to be defined record by record as opposed to a definitive single (unlike, say, most male-led rock-groups); thus, come the arrival of the verdant, orchestral tones of 'Thinking Of Tomorrow' - her third track to be extracted from the 'Daybreaker' release of last year - once again, we wonder why we're here.

Sure, it may stand on its own two legs taken outside of a cohesive body of twinned recordings, but with an unlikelihood of charting, nor a chance to inspire a revelation upon those not already switched on, 'Thinking...' just remains another Orton composition unnoticeably neglected by an occupied mainstream, and a great, firm reminder of who was gallivanting such a delicious, inconspicuous art before anyone even knew of Norah Jones.
