Lesser - 'Suppressive Acts I-X'

Evolution. It's a contentious old issue at the best of times.

So it's a fairly safe bet that applying it terms of musical progression is likely to provoke controversy of some kind - but what the hell. Sure, we've got Radiohead pushing back mainstream barriers with varying degree of critical and commercial success, but rock audiences today seem to be collectively fearful of the new and the innovative... I mean, here at rockfeedback, we all fawn over bands like The Thrills, The Darkness and The Strokes: none of whom could be wholly described accurately as cutting-edge and who overtly plunder rock's treasure chest of yore for inspiration both musically and sartorially.

Gratitude and kudos, then, to the likes of Lesser. The project of enigmatic San Diego native J Dφerck, musical trail-blazer who under varying guises, including stints in rock bands during the late-80s, has arrived to 'Suppressive Acts I-X': quite possibly the weirdest album rockfeedback's heard all f**king year.

Pigeon-holed it most certainly cannot be. A truly warped (Warp-ed?) mιlange taking in everything from insane Melvins-style thrash ('The Science Of Pathology') to belligerent, sample-driven, minimalist hip-hop ('Dandy In The Fedora') via a series of immersing experimental cuts, this is an album that takes us to the very peripheries of what is conventionally considered 'music'. And fantastically done it is, too.
