The Pattern - 'Fragile Awareness' (Wichita)

4/5

The Pattern - 'Fragile Awareness'

Almost beginning in precisely the same revved-up, electric pace as 'God Save The Queen', The Pattern's latest 45 'Fragile Awareness' grinds into a blazing furnace of steamy hooks, old-fashioned riffs, soul-style 'ooh-ooh-oohs', manic drumming and frontman Chris Appelgren's provocative and snarling vox. Just the typical fayre, then.

Well, you'd think so - but the opener certainly makes for a stark contrast to the following Kinks-esque mellowness and chopping guitars of 'Ladies Speaking Out', displaying a warmer and less raucous shade to the Oakland five-piece... That is until the final 'You Or You' restores the high-level rock-pedigree, causing a wilder rumble than the results of a jungle of gorillas during mating season.

Traditional yet fresh, The Pattern on record is only bettered when experienced live - but why not try both for full satisfaction?
