Guitar-solos that stab at your eye-balls, a tag-association to one Jack White and we've got our new garage-rock sensations - The Paybacks. But, wait - there's another one: the similarly mighty, crushing thrust of The Hentchmen.
Dealing with the former first, we certainly do have a hot proposition on our hands; Wendy Case's fantastical wail cuts through the remarkably tuneful and distorted 'Scotch Love' and 'Lazy Things', two deserve-to-be-underground-hits in the making, as cocksure and immediately as any of their fellow scenesters... It's hot property alright, and you're advised to leave the premises before you get burnt.
Though not yet - part-two of the release heralds the welcoming of a more traditional set-up, with The Hentchmen especially earning accolade through their extravagant brandishing of Johnny Volarι's chirpily rigid organ (no, the musical kind, laydees...). Coupling the drum-crush of 'Virginia Dare', we get more of Volarι's astoundingly punk-stylised sneer and a trashy guitar that simply reeks of steaming clubs and dirty underwear.
Two bands and one release to cherish, this is the 'New Rock 'N' Roll' executed at its very highest order.
