The Polyphonic Spree - 'Soldier Girl' (Fierce Panda)
4/5

Almost sinfully infectious and just as riotously elevating, 'Soldier Girl', The Polyphonic Spree's debut UK single, could well prove to be one of the finest of 2002.
Possessing the largest, boldest, loudest musical-arrangements to be knocked out this side of 'West Side Story', it's quite fitting that Tim DeLaughter and his merry troop of 25 band-members - comprising of choir-members, trumpeters, a grandiose rhythm-section, a woodwind-orchestra, and next to anything else remotely playable - are tipped to become one of this year's brightest sensations. With enveloping bells, heavy percussion and choral-chants, the associated Flaming Lips-esque vocal sweetness and, yes, Beach Boys-esque sentiments, 'Soldier Girl' is a genre-destructing, soulful epic.
Original, yet simultaneously harking back to classic pop of the past for melodic-inspiration, The Polyphonic Spree are surely destined to become more than an overnight sensation. Just don't invite all of them over for dinner.
