Primal Scream & Kate Moss - 'Some Velvet Morning' (Columbia)
4/5
By: Thomas Hannan

Right, hands up who saw this coming? No, honestly, does anyone actually remember Primal Scream's debut, 'Sonic Flower Groove'? Were there any hints at all amongst its dreamy pop that things would go quite the way they did?
Well, there are none that we can find anyway. Deservedly, Bobby Gillespie's band of noble troopers have reached that old career retrospective time (this duet being lifted from their current 'Dirty Hits' best of), and as much as this seems a funny (albeit temporary) ending to their sordid tale, it stakes a hefty claim for a place amongst their best work.
Far from being just a pretty face stuck on a record to shift copies, it may come as a surprise that the one of the utmost beauty (that's Kate Moss, not Mani, right?) makes this track. As effective as Gillespie's whispers 'n' yelps are, it's her Nico-lite seductive tones that give 'Some Velvet Morning' its seductive splendour, all Ladytron aping synthesisers and sleazy atmospherics. Who'd have thought it; those trendy friends came in useful after all.
