Pulp - 'Bad Cover Version' (Universal-Island)

4/5

Pulp - 'Bad Cover Version'

Even after originally forming under the guise of Arabicus Pulp back in 1978, Jarvis Cocker and his motley cru have hit their stride with current LP, 'We Love Life', and - predictably, like a lot of strong music - due to its cunning originality and perfect experimentation, minus the pretension or lack of tunes, it's fallen upon very few ears compared to previous efforts. Typical.

But, as long as the quality-content is continually available on offer, and those in the know appreciate and enjoy such a fact, then the release of 'Bad Cover Version' should be viewed as a special thing. Accompanied with the most hilarious video since Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas' effort - which the promo-clip for this single incidentally spoofs - the track is even backed up by Miss Murphy from Moloko and Nick Cave providing their own 'bad cover versions' of Pulp-classics. Genius.

And the lead-track itself is a sumptuous and relentless barrage of strings and backing-vocals - the latter provided by The Swingle Sisters - creating the most beautiful Scott Walker-esque number the band have ever created - the tune even produced by Mr Walker, too. We're honoured.
