Damien Rice - 'Woman Like A Man EP' (DRM)

4/5

Damien Rice - 'Woman Like A Man'

'You wanna get boned / You wanna get stoned... You wanna get f**ked inside out...' Travis this is not.

On his first EP-release, Damien Rice is keen to show yet another side to his chameleon-esque character. A man synonymous with creating one of the finest Irish debut albums of an age - 'O', from which a track (the glorious 'Delicate') is lifted to feature on this release - Rice has to date showcased largely an acoustic-based melancholia-slumber that's as timeless as the rural hills that (possibly) surround his home.

Yet, as demonstrated on new work - 'Woman Like A Man' - there's not so much 'endearing' as there is ill angst, locked within his most immediately listenable piece to date. The formula returns to before otherwise in a luscious 'Lonelily', almost a folkified 'No Woman, No Cry', whilst 'The Professor' is a blissful, stark strum and vox affair that could prove tear-jerking, if it weren't for yet more of the aforementioned profanity-strewn sentiments.

Sincerity by the buckletload, and just as much cursing, this may be for some an offensive batch of lullabies, but ultimately a collection that's far more honest, human and intense than the beat-around-the-bush chirpiness of his surrounding, male, solo - and inferior - contemporaries.
