Saint Etienne - 'Soft Like Me' (Mantra)
3/5
By: Toby L

Four and a half minutes of golden, silky, slinky, smooth (insert additional 'chilled' adjectives here), Saint Etienne are back with their second single to be lifted from current-dripping-in-class-LP, 'Finisterre'.
For a rare moment, damsel-in-a-dress Sarah Cracknall takes a back-seater here, providing her trademark girlyness only for a chorus up against an easy-listening throb of a pace, whilst a not-quite-but-almost-hip-hop vein prevails via the stylings of MC Wildflower, where the results aren't so much threatening, as dazzlingly pop-obsessed.
A change to the SE formula in parts then, but still distinctively them, the 'Etienne may continually further away from their contemporaries on a daily basis, but there's still a fan-base of thousands that are happy to lap this up as if it were Cracknall's own private cauldron of cabbage-juice.
