The Shining - 'Young Again' (Zuma)

3/5

The Shining - 'Young Again'

Writing songs as if 1995 never really ended, ex-Verve compadres and several member-newbies - collectively, The Shining - are back with this, their third single, 'Young Again'. And, clearly, this is the one they want to propel them to the upper-reaches of the singles-chart - playing their overused indie-chords and combing their greasy, long hair with all the hopeful energy of a distant Cast or Shed Seven.

Yet, to insult would be to miss the point; The Shining's melodic produce is developed for those that like their music simple, choruses soaring and guitars intrusively hook-based. Yet, there's the nagging feeling that this just ain't enough. Taking from influences of old is fine in itself, but when not contributing anything else other than borrowed ideas, well... This is when music soars to peaks of mediocrity as opposed to innovation.

For now, The Shining's glow is just bright enough to warrant attention - but they're gonna need to strike a light in the ole' inspiration-banks in other fortes aside from Britpop if they want any career of prolonged duration.
