The Sleepy Jackson - 'Good Dancers' (Virgin)

The Sleepy Jackson - 'Good Dancers'

Listen buddy, you got problems, I got problems, we all got problems. But come closer and we shall reveal the temporary cure. For the three and a half minutes that 'Good Dancers' has you in its grip, it's as if nothing else is actually happening in the world, just the hypnotic swirls and subversive whispers delivered by The Sleepy Jackson. If your woes return, well, that's what 'repeat' buttons were invented for.

For a man renowned for writing down some fascinating lyrics, be it on paper or his face for the purpose of making photo shoots that little bit less boring, it's a wonder that here, head honcho Luke Steele puts words so low down in the mix - you'll have a hard time picking up any long stretches of prose, be it because they're either just so softly spoken or coated in such a lot of sun-soaked ambience that they're largely inaudible.

So 'Good Dancers', what should be their breakthrough single, could be about anything, and that's part of its charm. It also manages to sound heartbreakingly sad and comfortingly optimistic simultaneously, spinning you round in all directions. It takes something special to be so captivating with its confusion. The Sleepy Jackson are very special indeed.
