South - 'Loosen Your Hold' (Double Dragon)

South - 'Loosen Your Hold'

On paper, South, with their obsessions split between the worlds of rock and dance, sound like a band who haven't quite figured out where they're heading just yet. It's even more confusing then that 'Loosen Your Hold' sounds quite so full and focused.

This is the melodic pop side of South, the one that'll make you tap your feet instead of want to move them on the dancefloor. From the start, with its Love-aping intro and heavy use of what is currently rock's most fashionable instrument (put a banjo on your Christmas list kids, you'll be too cool for school), it's quite easy to see how they didn't sit too comfortably on the Mo' Wax label. It's a token slice of classic Dave Eringa production (i.e. plush and overflowing with sound) that draws you in with each bar, but what with clocking in at a mere 2 minutes 41, for a relatively leisurely-paced song, it seems over before it's really even started.

It's short and sweet, yes, but by no means a classic. Think of 'Loosen Your Hold' as a taster - South profess to have a lot more to them than this. Good news then, as this is pretty alluring in itself.
