Stereophonics - 'Madame Helga' (V2)

Stereophonics - 'Madame Helga'

Oh well, at least they sound like they're having *fun*.

After what many perceived as the tedious earnestness of 'Just Enough Education to Perform', it's nice to find Kelly Jones and co. residing in slightly more unruly mood. Sadly, little consolation, of course, to those of us who remember the raw brilliance of the 'Phonics debut album, 'Word Gets Around', and its superbly observant (yet compassionate) lyrical musings on small-town life.

But these days, a glam-tinged single that sounds most like 'Mamma Told Me Not To Come', the lads' collaboration with Tom Jones, is actually seen as an improvement on what preceded it. Just a shame that 'Local Boy in the photograph' seems such a long, long time ago.
