The Strokes - 'The Modern Age EP' (Rough Trade)
4/5
By: Stephen Potter
The lo-fi punk of seventies New York given a blast that makes me jump up and run round me flat. This incendiary fire burns outta the speakers with a poppy twist to make yer smile: the riffs are catchy, voice tuneful - in a ruff as f**k way - then the guitar lick kicks in and I'm floored by the chaotic beauty.

Second track, 'Last Nite', keeps the drunken pop-twist fuel burning with hooks to make yer scream. Urgghh: at this rate of adoration, yer most probably think I'm wearing skin-tight, black Levi's in that old, scrawny NYC way, but, honestly, it's never been my bag - the Ramones don't mean shit to me, but Strokes pick up the legend and do something that no one else has managed for years, make messy pop to get drunk to, whilst never making yer think that it's just hitting that lowest common denominator thing. Go get it.
