Sum 41 - 'What We're All About' (Universal-Island)
2/5
By: James Faherty

Those loveable roguish Canadian punks are back again - this time, with a slightly different formula for new single, 'What We're All About' - which just so happens to soundtrack the 'Spiderman' motion-picture.
Sure enough, the opening ditty may sound familiar; indeed, it is the same as the freestyle rap the cheeky quartet opened the video version of 'Fat Lip' with. Yet, listen closer and you may recognise that catchy riff: yes - a shameless rip-off of the Beastie Boys' fantastic 'No Sleep Til Brooklyn', from their '84 'License to Ill' album.
As if that wasn't enough, the rhymes are even near identical, the vocal intonation far too similar to hold any character of its own, and - by crikey - they even got ol' Kerry King (Slayer's guitarist and all-round, scary bald bloke) to perform the solo on both the song and the accompanying promo-video - King having previously worked on the Beasties' 'Fight For Your Right'! A coincidence? Or merely cashing in and regurgitating a formula that worked ten years ago?
Who cares anyway; fair play to the wee tykes, they're far too cute to get angry at. In future, though boys, just leave the comedy white rap/rock to the old pros and stick with ya own thing; now run along and play, or something...
