Super Furry Animals - 'It's Not The End Of The World' (Epic)

4/5

By: Spencer McCloud

The inescapable (now they have a gazillion-pound budget, anyway) SFA follow up the superb 'Rings Around The World' LP with another cut from their first ever extravagant album for Epic Records. And guess what... It's absolutely superb again.

Super Furry Animals

The fact is that SFA are everything up-and-coming young pretenders are wanting to be. But whilst others may merely come across as a novelty band populated by 'scallies', SFA have the ideas, courage and, quite possibly the drugs, to make it work.

To best describe this tune in particular, imagine My Bloody Valentine had they been on enough Prozac to kill a horse, a vast wall of sound rotating around Gruff's ever-amazing Welsh croon. As ever, SFA mix cacophony and melody into a scintillating and uplifting combination, with amazing orchestration halfway between techno and classical.

In fact, there's such a mix of just about everything that it might get a bit much to listen to sometimes. But remember - as they sing so dreamily - at least it's not the end of the world.
